Different Scientists and Their Discoveries of the Muscular System

Most likely all of the scientist below are neuroscientist. The definition of neuroscientist is:
Neuroscientist: A scientist who studies the nervous system, including the neural basis of behavior; parts of the nervous system such as the visual or auditory systems; the function of groups of neurons (nerve cells); what individual neurons do; what happens at the synapse; ion channels in a neuronal membrane; and the genetic basis of neuronal function.

  • Guillaume-Benjamin-Amand Duchenne, French neurologist, who was first to describe several nervous and muscular disorders and, in developing medical treatment for them, created electrodiagnosis and electrotherapy.
  • Samuel Victor Perry was a pioneer in muscle research and was responsible for the education of a worldwide body of scientists in his discipline. Probably the best current marker for the diagnosis and prognosis of heart attack and other heart conditions arises from his research about 30 years ago on the muscle protein called troponin I.
  • The Swiss biologist Victor Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) was the first scientist to discover the relationship between nerves and muscles. Prior to his research, scientists knew little about the structure and function of nerves or about their interaction with muscles. A popular theory at the time even held that nerves were hollow tubes through which a spirit or fluid flowed." 'Haller rejected this theory, especially since no one had ever been able to locate or identify such a spirit or fluid. Instead, he sought to prove that a muscle contracts when a stimulus is applied to it. Haller labeled this action irritability. In his research, Haller soon found that irritability increased when a stimulus was applied to a nerve connected to a muscle. He then rightly concluded that in order for a muscle to contract, a stimulus had to come from its connecting nerve. Haller conducted over 190 experiments to determine the sensitivity of various parts of the human body, and determined that the beating of the heart must be caused by the cardiac muscle itself. He is considered the father of modern neurology (the branch of medicine that studies the nervous system).
  • Marcus C. Schaub is a European scientist responsible for a muscle research group that has annual meetings. These meeting attract many people. Most anyone can attend these meetings, if they have the right knowledge.
