Diseases and Injuries Of/In the Muscular System
Below are some diseases and injuries that can take place in the Muscular System.
Diseases
Isaac's Syndrome- One of rarest kinds of muscle diseases, which not many are aware of is known as the Issac's syndrome. It is a neuromuscular disorder.
Lou Gehrig's Disease- Damages motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons are nerve cells that control muscle movement.
Botulism: Form of food poisoning in which a bacterial toxin prevents the release of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions, resulting in paralysis."
Myasthenia gravis: Autoimmune disease in which antibodies attack acetylcholine, blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to muscle fibers.
Tetanus: Bacterial disease in which a bacterial toxin causes the repetitive stimulation of muscle fibers, resulting in convulsive muscle spasms and rigidity.
Muscular Dystrophy- The word 'dystrophy' comes from Latin and Greek words that mean 'faulty nutrition'" "Therefore the term 'muscular dystrophy' actually refers to a group of diseases that weaken and eventually destroy skeletal muscles.
Polio- Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system. it results in muscle painand weakness, and in the most severe cases the sufferer becomes paralyzed.
Dermatomyositis (DM)- a rare inflammatory muscle disease that affects both the muscles as well as the skin. DM can affect people of all races, sex and age. Although it affects both males and females equally in childhood, it is more common in females in adults. The exact cause of DM is unknown but it is believed to result from an immune-mediated process triggered by outside factors in genetically predisposed individuals.
Overuse Injuries
Patellofemoral syndrome- generalized knee pain.
Chondromalacia- the wearing away of the cartilage on the back surface of the kneecap" "Shin splints area common name for pain felt in the front of the calf.
Compartment syndrome- occurs when the compartments between muscles, which contain blood vessels or nerves become swollen.
Tendinitis- usually develops from overuse of a tendon or muscle.

Knee Brace
These are used when some part
of the knee has been overused
or injured. They give support
and balance to the injury.

Elbow Brace
When someone is injured around
the elbow area they use this brace.
It allows mobility, but still give
support and placement.
